In this talk we shall first motivate the special status - not only within
POG - of the phenomenon of (abstract) syntactic structure among other
language phenomena. Second, we shall try to develop a particular kind of
this syntactic structure, motivated i.a. by the scale of word order
freedom. Third, we shall consider several interesting word order phenomena,
above all "split NPs" in German and Czech, which can be described quite
naturally using the syntactic structure proposed, corroborating thus its
linguistic adequacy.
