Vamsi Kiran Adhikarla was born in Vizianagaram, India. He holds a
master's double degree (M.Tech, M.Sc.) (2011) from Blekinge Tekniska
Högskola, Sweden and Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU)
Hyderabad, India. Vamsi is currently a doctoral student in the faculty
of Information Technology, Pazmany Peter Catholic University, Hungary.
He worked as Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher at Holografika,
Hungary during April 2012 ­ March 2015. Holografika has developed
proprietary technologies in 3D visualisation, including the real 3D
light­field display product line HoloVizio and related technologies.
The company develops and sells these 3D display systems and related
software components. Vamsi has been involved in various EU research
and development projects like SAFROS, 3D VIVANT, and MUSCADE. He took
part in various research exchanges and collaborated with prestigious
research institutes working in the fields of light field rendering and
interaction. His research interests include capture, processing,
rendering and visual enhancement for 3DTV.

Abstract

The main aim of this talk is to explore light field data to enable
deeper understanding and efficient representation. In particular, the
talk presents various representations and rendering techniques for
light field displays and proposes the requirements for future
technologies that deal with light field rendering, distribution and
interaction in the context of projection-based light field displays.
Projection-based light field displays provide an efficient means to
display photorealistic light field. With increased Field Of View (FOV)
and continuous parallax, light field displays allow multiple users to
freely move in front of the display to perceive 3D without any
obstacles. These displays have good potential to be the future 3D
display solution and novel methods to process the massive light field
data are very much needed. Using 3D computer graphics, it is possible
to acquire and render light rays from given arbitrary positions to
define light field. However, a stable means to acquire, process and
render light field from real-world scenes that meet the requirements
of such light field displays are not fully available yet. The current
talk outlines the available real-time rendering procedures for
holographic light field displays from multiview content and presents
the possible directions for improvements. In addition the talk also
reports on a setup for free-hand interaction with light field data
using Leap Motion Controller. The work has applications in free view
point television, tele-presence, virtual reality and video
conferencing systems.
