Abstract

Interventional procedures on deformable organs like the liver pose difficulties for the radiologists when inserting the needle toward a lesion. The purpose of our approach is to assist the needle insertion under CT-fluoroscopy guidance for the RF liver ablation procedure by transferring high resolution contrasted pre-interventional information into the intervention room.

For this particular application a reliable and automated deformable slice-to-volume registration is very difficult to achieve, we therefore developed different visualization modes based on rigid slice-to-volume registration as alternative solutions. The visualization modes are coping with the uncertainty in estimating the deformation and bring much more information than a single registered slice.
We consulted experienced interventional radiologists and they confirmed that our approach is very valuable for the needle guidance.
