Abstract

Web archives include both archives of contents originally published on the Web (e.g., the Internet Archive) but also archives of contents published long ago that are now accessible on the Web
(e.g., the archive of the newspaper The Times). Thanks to an increased awareness that born-digital contents are worth preserving and to improved digitization techniques, web archives have grown
in size and number in recent years. To unfold their full potential search techniques that consider their special characteristics are needed.

This dissertation addresses three important problems toward this objective, namely: (i) Efficient support for time-travel text search, (ii) Dealing with terminology evolution and countering its negative
effects on retrieval effectiveness, and (iii) improving retrieval effectiveness for temporal information needs.
