Jonathan Deutscher et al. introduced a new algorithm, termed annealed particle filter, for articulated body motion tracking. It is a modified particle filter that uses a continuation principle, based on annealing, to introduce the influence of narrow peaks in the fitness function, gradually. However, neither the quality of the result nor restrictions are given that are necessary for the stability of the algorithm. In contrast, the generalised annealed particle filter is developed from a mathematical framework based on the same ideas as the heuristic annealed particle filter. As a result, we are able to give an estimate for the error and state conditions that are sufficient for the convergence of the algorithm.
