Abstract

ABSTRACT This talk will consist of two parts. In the first part I will
present a model developed as part of my PhD at the University of
Twente. The model is motivated by the design and evaluation of natural
language dialogue systems. Crucially, in the development of a
dialogue system we are modeling some joint activity. In the
literature there were two ways to do so: by joint planning and action
(Grosz & Kraus 1996), or by dialogue games (Carletta et al 1997; Mann
1998). I will argue that these methods are complementary. Dialogue
games can be seen as recipes for joint action.

In the second part of the talk I will present a recent application of
these ideas to multi-agent systems. Usually, interaction between
agents is governed by a shared protocol. However, in open environments
a more flexible approach is needed. We propose to use a particular
type of dialogue game: initiative-response pairs. From these basic
exchanges larger dialogue games can be constructed coherently. The
notion of 'uptake' (Clark 1996) is crucial. An initiative invites
other participants to respond in a particular way. Thus the
interaction is jointly determined by the participants.
