Abstract

The talk attempts an overview of the models for parallel machines, external memory and caches as they are used by algorithmicists. Particular emphasis is on the following three questions:

- To what extent are important aspects of real machines modelled? (For current and future architectures.)
- Can we make predictions which are useful for applications?
- How can we combine models for different aspects of the machine? For example: Can we find a model which describes multiple processors, multiple local or global levels of memory hierarchiy, interconnection networks and physical feasibility of the overall system -- and is still useable?
