Abstract

Wind energy plays an increasing role in the supply of energy world-wide. The design of a wind farm

involves a lot of different large-scale and complex optimization problems.
This includes the placement of turbines on a wind farm to achieve the best possible energy output under the consideration of wake effects.
Possible solutions to this problem have to be evaluated using complex and costly computations or simulations. We show how the placement
of wind turbines for large wind farms (with up to 1000 turbines) can be optimized using evolutionary algorithms.
Our results show a significant increase in energy output compared to the currently best known approaches.
