Abstract

Functional annotation and structure prediction are two research areas with a major impact on the current post-genomic era. Developments in the protein structure prediction field are eflected in large scale prediction experiments (CASP) which take place every two years. We will look at the results of the previous CASP events from our group and from other participants, and highlight the successes and identify problem areas. The last experiment (CASP4) provides a snapshot of the current state of the field, so we describe the results obtained by the community in more detail. Finally, in order to measure the progress achieved, we compare the results between the different CASPs. Automated functional annotation of protein sequences is another important application area of bioinformatics. We will present WILMA, our platform for annotation of protein sequences. We will describe our solutions for design, content and user interface. Finally we will compare electronic and curated annotation data.
