Abstract
Light fields are often promoted as the next big step in digital photography. But how can popular digital image processing algorithms, like panorama stitching or content-aware retargeting, be applied to light fields? A straight forward application of image processing algorithms is often not possible as not only spatial but also directional consistency has to be preserved. We present various ways to create wide-field-of-view light fields by panorama stitching or retargeting techniques in the first part of the talk.

Another drawback of light fields is their demanding sampling process, resulting in complicated optics or camera systems. In the second part of the talk we show how to reduce the capturing effort by using more efficient sampling patterns and directional upsampling; by efficiently guiding users to record a light field with a single moving camera; or by using a spatio-temporal coding to capture HDR light-field videos with reduced motion blur.
