Abstract

"Weird data", “Strange devices”? Those terms do not sound very scientific, and it is unlikely that one would see them in a scientific publication. Yet "weird" or similar terms are often heard when discussing the visualization of complex, high dimensional, uncertain, or even just extremely large datasets. Instead of dismissing these problems, we should think of them as "challenges" or "opportunities", realizing that developing novel visualization techniques and exposing them in a user-friendly environment can be both engaging to us, as well as beneficial to users of visualization and analysis systems.

In this talk I will present previous and current research, as well as plans for the future in the area of scientific visualization. I will pick some examples of what I consider to be among the more significant visualization challenges, and outline approaches that show promise in handling the difficult task of visualizing these "weird" data sets on “strange” devices.
