This informal talk is intended to prompt discussion of two related ideas: first, that interactive speech recognition can be usefully joined to interactive machine translation to yield interactive speech translation; and second, that the Internet offers a tremendous opportunity for experiments with both real-time translation of text dialogues and speech translation.
I've carried out no experiments in these areas so far; but I have done some preparatory research concerning available tools for a "quick and dirty" speech translation system, and can briefly share the results, which seem to me encouraging. I can also report on a related project by Piotr Kowalski and others.

First, I'll make the case for interactive speech translation. I'll go on to point out some advantages of isolated-word speech recognition for near-term speech translation experiments. I'll conclude with discussion of the Internet as a medium for experimentation, with special attention to Internet Relay Chat.
