Abstract

The O-Plan project at the Artificial Intelligence Applications Institute of the University of Edinburgh is exploring a practical
computer based environment to provide for specification, generation, interaction with, and execution of activity plans. O-Plan is intended to be a domain independent general planning and control framework with the ability to embed detailed knowledge of the domain. The system combines a number of techniques which include: hierarchical partial order plan representation, an agenda based control architecture, constraint posting and least commitment object selection, constraint handling across time, resources, authorities, spatial and world state.
An overview of the O-Plan architecture will be provided together with details of the problem solving strategy adopted by O-Plan. Examples, case studies and materials from a number of domains including air campaign planning, distribution logistics, space operations and non-combatant evacuation operations will also be introduced. Finally, the talk will provide details of the future directions of the O-Plan project and its potential applications.
