Abstract

When you search on Google for "computer", Google shows you ads of computer retailers. How does Google decide, which ads to show and in which order they should be presented? And how much should the advertiser get charged, when you click on the link?

I'll first give some background on web advertising, introducing the necessary concepts with example.

Then I'll explain different mechanisms for pricing such "sponsored search results". In particular the ones used by Yahoo and Google.

There's actually some interesting game theory (auction mechanisms) hiding in this area and I'll present some of the core concepts!

No knowledge about game theory will be assumed and the talk should be understandable to everyone.
