What and Who

Gaze-supported Multimodal Interaction

Sophie Stellmach
Technical University of Dresden
Talk

Sophie Stellmach is a PhD student at the Technische Universität Dresden. Her current research focuses on the seamless interaction with distant displays considering a combination of different input modalities including a user's visual attention. Her diverse background includes research on eye tracking, digital games, computer graphics, and human-computer interaction. Her doctoral studies have been sponsored by the German National Academic Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes).

Abstract

Using our eyes for interacting with digital systems is particularly appealing, because our eye gaze provides a fast and natural input channel. Especially the combination of gaze with other input modalities and its flexibility to be used for diverse display setups is an exciting, promising, and also challenging way of human-computer interaction that has not received a high research emphasis so far. This development is also fostered by continuous advances in eye tracking technology. Promising examples for this novel style of multimodal gaze-supported interaction are the seamless selection and manipulation of graphical objects or the exploration of virtual information spaces shown by utilizing a combination of a mobile handheld (such as a smartphone) and gaze input.

In my talk, I will provide a brief introduction to gaze-based interaction in general and present insights into my research at the Interactive Media Lab lead by Prof. Dr. Raimund Dachselt at the Technische Universität Dresden. Thereby, I will particularly emphasize the high potential of the emerging area of multimodal gaze-supported interaction.
