In this talk, we'll look together at some of the problems of today's data ecosystem, including issues of privacy, control, fairness, surveillance, and manipulation. We'll explore the ways in which various recent technologies can provide (partial) solutions to some of these woes, and we'll confront some of the limitations of technology. The discussion will expose a rich array of interesting research problems that bridge between computer science, law, economics, and beyond.
