Title:Immersive Analytics - Concepts and Challenges
Speaker:Karsten Klein
coming from:University of Konstanz
Speakers Bio:Karsten Klein is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the CS department at the University of Konstanz.

A main focus of his research is in Immersive Analytics, a research direction that studies how technologies can facilitate a deep cognitive, perceptual and/or emotional involvement of humans when understanding and reasoning with data.

He works on the design and implementation of immersive/visual analytics approaches for complex data from application areas,
in particular from the life sciences, and on network analysis and graph drawing algorithms as well as their underlying graph theoretical principles.
He is involved in a variety of research collaborations with researchers from the life sciences, and participates in a number of software projects that realize the developed concepts in free open source software for use in the corresponding communities, e.g. the Open Graph Drawing Framework (OGDF), the Visualization and Analysis of Networks containing Experimental Data framework (VANTED), and the Scaffold Hunter project.

He has received his Diploma from Universit├Ąt des Saarlandes, and his Ph.D from TU Dortmund, and
has been a developer at the center of advanced european studies and research (caesar) from 2001 to 2004. During his post-doctoral studies at the University of Sydney and at Monash University (Australia), he developed new metrics and new visualization approaches for networks, and explored the potential of immersive technologies for visual data analysis.

Immersive analytics (IA) investigates the impact and potential of technologies regarding the cognitive,
perceptual and/or emotional involvement of humans to support analytical reasoning and decision making.

These technologies include, but are not restricted to, virtual and augmented reality devices, large screens and monitor walls,
CAVEs, stereoscopic displays, and multi-sensory devices such as gesture tracking systems and sound or audio recording systems.

In this talk, I will shortly introduce the main concepts and research questions in IA, give some examples of our group's research projects,
and discuss corresponding challenges.
