Abstract

The challenging task of capturing dynamically deforming 3D surfaces has numerous applications, typically in the field of computer animation and augmented reality.Researchers and engineers in the young field of high performance textile design also require such systems to capture deforming cloth, especially for testing and evaluating garments at the time they are worn. To this end high precision of the captured garment and a physical cloth model is required.

In the national research project "Fit to Deformation", we aim to develop a system that meets these requirements. To quickly and precisely track not only geometry but also deformation of garments, our method is currently based on a body suit, with specific patterns printed on it. In this talk, pros and cons of this approach will be discussed, and the current state and work-in-progress results of the research project will be presented. At the end, we would like to motivate a discussion on promising applications of our measurement approach in computer graphics, such as the further advancement of human shape models.
