The BCB is a network in the Berlin-Brandenburg region founded to bridge the gap between genome research and medicine. Based on three professorships and seven junior research groups, its goal is to build up an extensive interdisciplinary network of bioinformatics specialists from both academia and the industrial sector. The BCB's work is focused on

- Genomic annotation and biological knowledge management
- Prediction of structure and function of gene products
- Cellular and disease modelling

In addition to its research the BCB takes an active part in the education of students and junior scientists through implementing a
- Curriculum of Bioinformatics at the University of Applied Sciences, Berlin ("Aufbaustudiengang")
- Bioinformatics degree (master) at the Free University of Berlin.

In order to efficiently integrate its members, the BCB established the following working mechanisms:

- Junior research group Leaders are involved in university teaching
- Practical training of students within the research groups
- Joint BCB seminars
- Annual workshops
- Periodical evaluation by an external scientific advisory board.

The BCB is one of six German Competence Centers in Bioinformatics founded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in 2001 and financially supported over a period of five years.
