We investigate an optimality-based model of regulatory systems. According to this model, systems show a linear reaction to perturbations, and the behaviour of regulators is related to their function, i.e their influence on the relevant variables. This optimal behaviour can be realized by a causal feedback model. Assuming that the concept applies to explain gene expression data, we test predictions concerning knock-out experiments and simulate the correlated expression of metabolic genes.
