The Center for Bioinformatics is one of five German Competence Centers in Bioinformatics funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) in 2001. Its key focus in research is to bridge the gap between computer science and pharmaceutical research in order to accelerate target discovery and drug development.


The center itself forms a network comprising the following groups:

- three professorships and three junior research groups in Bioinformatics
- groups from the Universitaet des Saarlandes
- Computer Science
- Mathematics
- Physical Chemistry
- Biophysics
- Biochemistry, Technical Biochemistry
- Biopharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology
- Human Genetics
- Microbiology
- the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science
- the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence

The Center for Bioinformatics offers several study programs in bioinformatics (internationally accredited Bachelor's and Masters's degrees as well as German Diploma).
