A large and quickly growing fraction of users access the Internet
over broadband networks such as Cable and Digital
Subscriber Lines (DSL). The rapid proliferation of broadband
access is driving the popularity of several new Internet
applications, including music and movie downloads, Voiceover-
IP, and online gaming.
By developing a noval measurement tool we were able to analyze
a large number of broadband endhosts in Europe and the USA. One of
the contribution of this work is, that today real-time flows like VoIP
cannot coexist with bulk data traffic like video downloads. This is
mainly due to the employment of large queues in front of the last
link which cause an increase in delay for all flows and this is especially
disastrous for real-time traffic.
This talk will present results and conclusions from our analysis.
