Perceptually-based Near Eye Displays

After working in VFX and animation for 5 years on such films as Maleficent and Wreck-It Ralph, David set out to make the next augmented reality display by returning to school and getting a PhD from UNC-Chapel Hill.  Now in his 4th year of grad school, he is still pursuing that quest while wrangling his 2 sons with help from his lovely wife. His research interests typically involve the fusion of two or more fields such as his recent varifocal display work which melds materials science, optics and computer science. Some of his other research interests include machine learning, robotics, human perception, and fabrication-oriented design. Outside the lab he enjoys triathlons, tabletop games, and the occasional fantasy novel.

Abstract

In the coming virtual and augmented reality era, many devices will attempt to enhance our daily lives or take us to other worlds. The success of a device in immersing us in these experiences will be determined by how well it matches our experiences with the real world. By examining how people perceive the real world, we can find many ways to simplify and enhance near eye displays, so they can create perceptually indistinguishable visual experiences. This talk will discuss perceptually improving performance using such techniques as simplifying the visual field while maintaining accurate depth cues and imperceptibly reducing overall display resolution. The underlying perceptual foundations of these techniques will be presented and discussed including user studies to verify them. The talk will cover approaches for creating near eye displays based on these techniques, including varifocal displays and foveated displays, with the aim of creating consumer-level devices.
