Talk

Seongkook is a postdoctoral researcher in the DGP Lab at the University of Toronto working with Daniel Wigdor. He received his Ph. D. in Computer Science at KAIST in 2017, under the supervision of Geehyuk Lee. He is interested in making communication between human and computers richer and more natural through the use of new modalities for input and output interfaces. His work has been published in conferences proceedings and journals, such as CHI, UIST, CSCW, and IEEE Haptics. (Learn more about Seongkook’s work here: http://seongkookheo.com

Abstract

Our natural touch is rich and nuanced with full of physical properties such as force and posture implying our intentions. As our hands are not only great actuators but also amazing sensors, we control posture and force based on what we sense and gather information about what we are touching.
In this talk I will introduce two contrasting projects, creating an illusion of movement on a rigid surface and creating a strong resistance in the air. While exploring the force-enriched touch interaction, users were experiencing frustration and fatigue because there was no response on the surface as they exert force. Instead of using a physically moving surface, we created a new haptic technique using vibration that creates an illusion of tangential movement that can dynamically change physical properties. When interacting with the VR environment, lack of proper haptic feedback degrades the immersiveness created by hi-fidelity audio and visual feedback. We developed an air-propulsion based ungrounded force feedback technique. The new technique uses propellers to create up to 4 N of force in arbitrary directions.
